Yosuke Matsuda, president and representative director of Japanese video game developer Square Enix, has said in his new year’s letter that blockchain-based games have started posing “a more significant presence” in the gaming space.
Matsuda said in his letter, which enumerates progress in the digital entertainment industry in 2019 and the video game company’s plans in 2020, that blockchain-based games are beginning to grow out of the infancy stage.
“Rather than treating blockchain gaming as an opportunity for speculative investment, we believe establishing whether it is capable of bringing something new to our customers’ gaming experiences will be the key to growth,” he also noted.
Blockchain gaming is one of the points that Matsuda included in his letter. The Square Enix head further disclosed that the Japanese firm plans to invest in different technologies it supported in its game development efforts to create new forms of entertainment.
Square Enix will also work to develop broader forms of artificial intelligence technologies for entertainment purposes, as well as resume its research and development efforts in extended reality or XR.
Square Enix is the game development company behind popular video game titles such as Final Fantasy, Life is Strange, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts.
